Abstract: Undoubtedly, over the last six decades ICT has increasingly influenced lifestyle, economy and other facets of the society. Over the last decade this process has even been accelerated by mobile technologies, in particular by the pervasive availability of mobile phones and related services. Simple handsets and sophisticated smartphones have dramatically changed the ways people communicate, work, and entertain. More and more activities are performed on the move: people talk, send and receive SMSs/MMSs and emails, take pictures, browse the internet, locate other people or facilities, and widely use other technically upbeat features of their mobile devices (e.g. calculators, organizers, music stores, notepads, and games). Subsequently to their unprecedented success on the stationary internet social networking and social media are now conquering also the mobile universe. It is then justified to see the emerging society as a mobile network society. After highlighting the impact of ICT and mobile technologies on the evolution of the society the paper argues that this evolution leads to a new form of society, called netism (network + ism), whose major features are networking, emphasis on symbolic goods, crucial role of knowledge and human and social capital, convergence of media, and new production and business models, and – on top of that – a new lifestyle.
